I've been writing since the day I learned how to hold a pencil. I remember being in first grade and making the decision to write a book. I set up a tv tray in my bedroom, decked it out with a pile of paper and a mug full of pencils and crayons, and i wrote a thirty page story about a girl who buys a butterfly cocoon from an exotic pet store. It hatched into a fairy.
When I was in third grade, my parents bought me an electric typewriter. Yes. That should tell you a bit about how old I am. I spent hours writing stories and illustrating my ideas.
I learned very quickly that drawing was not something I was good at and I quit.
My habit became a drug. I was always, always writing. When my dad got a computer, I spent hours and wasted egregious amounts of paper printing off multiple drafts of 100+ page stories.
I was known around my high school for carrying around several baby name books at any given time. I wrote poetry, and thought I was philosophical and romantic all together.
Nothing much came of any of it, though, and it's been a long time since I've considered myself a writer. I had a blog at one time. It was what is affectionately known in the interwebs as a "mommy blog", and I think I did well with it.
Lately, though, I've been working on something a bit more long term. I'm writing my first book, and for the first time ever, I actually feel like it's going somewhere real. It might sound a little silly to you, but I have also learned an awful lot about myself as I have been writing. And I think that part of that new discovery is that I would prefer to be called a "storyteller" instead of a "writer". I'm telling a story. My characters have a life of their own. To me, they are real, and I have a passion for them. In a way, it's their story, not mine. And I'm not just writing it. I feel like the term "storyteller" involves the reader more than someone who just writes.
